5 Warning Signs Your Septic Leach Field is Failing

Spotting Septic Trouble Early
Your septic leach field (or drain field) is the final and most critical stage of your wastewater treatment system. When it fails, untreated effluent can back up into your home or surface in your yard. Here are the top signs that your field is in trouble.
1. Slow Draining Sinks and Toilets
If all the drains in your house are slow (not just one isolated sink), it often means the septic tank is full because the leach field can no longer accept the wastewater.
2. Gurgling Sounds
Listen to your pipes. If you hear a gurgling sound when you flush a toilet or run the washing machine, it indicates a venting issue or a backup in the main line leading to the tank.
3. Lush, Spongy Grass Over the Field
While a green lawn is nice, a patch of grass over your leach field that is noticeably greener and grows faster than the rest of the yard is a bad sign. It means effluent is surfacing and acting as fertilizer.
4. Foul Odors
You should never smell raw sewage in your yard. If you detect a foul, rotten-egg odor near the tank or leach field, the system is not filtering properly.
5. Standing Water
Puddles of dark, smelly water in the area of your drain field are the ultimate sign of failure. The soil is completely saturated and the system must be replaced.
